Tidepool turns 20 ✨
Tidepool Turns 20 ✨
In 2000 a friend introduced me to a form of work that would change the rest of my life. I had no idea what a photo rep was when I took the job, but failing as a photographer myself it seemed like a great next step. I was fortunate to be hired by a rep named Arlene Johnson who taught me everything she knew, and everything about grace when she supported my eventual move to start Tidepool. While working for Arlene I became pregnant with my daughter Hazelle, as I always knew would happen but for sure didn’t expect it then. I soon was waddling my way into work in our little office on Stillman Street in San Francisco, next door to the stylist agency Artist Untied. A very sweet booking agent there noticed my growing bump and started peeking in to see how I was doing, asking me to lunch and encouraging my new love for bagels (and she always saved me her pickle). I had no idea at that time Ms Kathryn Schiff was to become my business partner and co-founder of Tidepool, my soul sister, and lifelong friend. But that’s how it evolved! We pretty quickly took a chance - on each other, and on this career path. It took months to find the right artists, even more to get ourselves organized, and a couple of years living off credit cards to break even. Some years after that Kathryn followed her intuition onto her path as a Spiritual Teacher, Energy Healer, Psychic Meditation Teacher and Minister. I encourage you to visit kathrynschiff.com and explore the vibes going on there, they are phenomenal and humming. It was scary and new without her, but from the very the beginning of Tidepool I caught a glimpse of my stubbornness, passion and joy for the work, and knew I would continue, encouraging Kathryn from the privilege of by her side.
Tidepool grew out of our shared vision that artists can be true to their own vision and still thrive in the commercial world. The first artists we signed felt edgy and unique, and we nurtured all of that, promoting their relevancy. There were some bumps along the way, learning what to promote and how to edit. Knocking on doors around the country has always been exciting, but our enthusiasm for the work hasn’t always been matched. Today, our roster, in my opinion, has evolved into the strongest group I have seen, and never more in harmony with each other, within our own commercial ecosystem. I am grateful to everyone who supported our beginnings, grateful for every failure and success (truly), and excited for the next decade.
Cheers, Tidepool! oxoxoxo, Brooke
